Co-op opening two stores in Wales this week as it reports sales surge

Co-op is set to open two new stores in Wales this week in a £1.2m investment that will create 30 jobs.

The new stores will open on Friday at Hawarden Road, Penyffordd in Flintshire and in Walter Road, Swansea.

This latest investment comes as the Co-operative Group today reports that half-year sales had surged higher on the back of "exceptional" food and wholesale trading after the pandemic drove grocery demand.

The business said total revenues increased by 7.6% to £5.8 billion for the 26 weeks to July 4.

It said food revenues increased by 5.2% to £3.9 billion for the period, with 9.9% like-for-like growth in the second quarter, after customers shopped closer to home and ate out less frequently during the lockdown.

Talking about their new Welsh stores, Paul Chudley, Co-op regional manager, said: “We are delighted to continue our investment programme in Wales which is creating new stores in communities, while transforming our existing sites.

“Co-op is committed to connecting communities and making a difference locally, and our aim is to operate at the heart of local life."
