Co-op launches major discount scheme to rival Sainsbury's and Tesco

Co-op has today introduced a major change to its prices for certain shoppers as it gears up to take on the likes of Sainsbury's and Tesco.

The supermarket chain has confirmed the launch of its new loyalty scheme that will offer its members personalised offers and lower prices on their shopping.

Co-op Membership, which costs £1 to join, will give shoppers personalised offers via the Co-op app. Members will also be able to earn up to 2p for every pound spent on own-branded products.

Launched from today, the new loyalty scheme comes just a week after Sainsbury's launched its Nectar Prices scheme that rivals Tesco Clubcard.

As reported by the Mirror, 15 items will be included in the new member prices, with the items to be rotated every three weeks.

As an example, its freezer deal - which contains five items, including fish fingers, fish fillets, chips, peas and ice cream - costs £5 for non-members and £6 without a loyalty card.

Further savings include a Co-op Irresistible Pizza that has been reduced from £6.45 to just £5 as part of the new incentive. The popular lunchtime deal - made up of one main, snack and drink - will cost £3.50 for members instead of the regular £4.

The incentive for Co-op Membership customers is part of the convenience store's five-year plan that will see it invest £240 million to help grow its members by a further one million.

Kenyatte Nelson, Chief Membership and Customer Officer at Co-op, said: “Our message is simple, Co-op members save more.

“The new push for member prices ensures that we’re rewarding the loyalty of shoppers with the most competitive prices on the best offers we have in our stores, alongside weekly personalised offers, exclusive games to win additional discounts and prizes, plus the benefit of money back via on own brand purchases, all while supporting local causes with funds raised via members’ spending in store.”

Here are a few examples of the Co-op Membership prices that shoppers can find:

  • Co-op Irresistible Pizza 510G (serves two) – non-members pay £6.45, members pay £5
  • Co-op Irresistible Pizza 235G (serves one) – non-members pay £4.10, members pay £3
  • Co-op freezer filler deal (Birds Eye Crispy Fish Fingers, Birds Eye Battered Extra Large Fish Fillets, Birds Eye Garden Peas, McCain Oven Chips, Solero Exotic Ice Cream) – non-members pay £6, members pay £5
  • Co-op lunchtime meal deal (main, drink snack) – non-members pay £4, members pay £3.50
