Retailer Co-op has hired 1,000 new staff to help keep stores open for local communities following the outbreak of the coronavirus.
The company has also installed 1,000 safety screens and has implemented the new £45 contactless limit which will prevent staff from having to handle cash.
The new recruits have been taken on to help in store as well as in the Co-op's other businesses in travel, floral and head office.
At the same time, 150 extra security guards have been employed to ensure colleagues and customers are safe while people shop for food and vital essentials.
Co-op chief executive, Debbie Robinson said: "As a co-operative retailer, we want to make sure we are leading the way for our communities during this difficult time.
"We hope that these measures and the work of our colleagues, members and customers show that we are coming together for our communities during this uncertain time and reacting to the challenges we face."
The Co-op is now working with councils across the UK, including those in Stafford and Lichfield, to launch a pioneering scheme aimed at getting food to the most vulnerable.
