Co-op chaos as shoppers descend on store to snap up last day bargains

Chaotic scenes as shoppers descend on Co-op to hunt for bargains on final day before closure.

Shoppers descended on a Co-op store to snap up bargains ahead of its permanent closure.

All fresh food, flowers and bread was reduced at the store in Darwen, Lancashire, as staff prepared to close its doors for good.

On its final day of opening today, thrifty shoppers turned up at the Co-op store, in Blackburn Road, and cleared its shelves.

Bunches of tulips, which should have been £3 each, were on sale for 75p while two pints of milk - normally priced at £1.45 - were being sold for 36p. A £1.50 bag of apples was priced at 38p while a £3.25 pasta bowl was reduced to 81p. Bags of salad along with other fresh fruit and veg was also massively reduced.

One shopper was seen filling 12 carrier bags of food and wheeling away a trolley full of eggs. Bemused passers-by were drawn inside after spotting the bargains.

Unable to resist, Lancs Live reporter Amy Fenton grabbed a basket and piled in as much as she could. She walked away with two overflowing carrier bags of fresh food and flowers which cost her just £5.66.

The shop is set to be converted into a Nisa store - a move regarded as a blow for regular customers at the Co-op's only store in Darwen.

The store will be closed for a week while conversion work is carried out.

Earlier this week, Lancs Live revealed that the land off Falcon Avenue, which had been earmarked for a new Co-op, was instead being used to build a Tesco Express. Tesco has confirmed the store is set to open later this year.
