Co-op building in Gateshead is set to become new homes

Plans to convert a former plaster works in a Gateshead village into housing have been lodged with the council.

Work has already started on transforming the former Co-operative building in Ryton into flats and a house.

Once its completed, six two bedroom flats, two one bedroom flats and one two bedroom house will be built within the interior of the Hexham Old Road building.

Applicant Brian Hunter was initially given permission to convert the site into housing in 2017, when he was given permission to build ten two bedroom flats and one three bedroom house on the premises.

However, because his plans have changed he has lodged a fresh application.

A design and access statement lodged with Gateshead Council stated that despite some areas of the building being demolished it will retain many of the existing features.

It said: “The proposal is to provide six two bedroom flats, two one bedroom flats and one two bedroom house within the interior of the existing building. Some areas will be demolished and the footprint of the building will reduce.

“This design development has sought to take the full advantage of the existing building and will retain many of the original features.”

Gateshead Council is expected to decide on the latest application this month.
