Co-op and Superdrug strike food deal

The Co-op has struck a deal with Superdrug to supply the health and beauty chain with food.

A trial will be launched at a number of railway stations and airports, with the Co-op supplying a range of its own-brand products including sandwiches, salads and fruit.

Matt Hood, trading director of Co-op Food, said: “We are continually exploring new ways to bring our award-winning products closer to shoppers and to reach new customers.

“Becoming food-to-go partner for Superdrug is an exciting development as Co-op continues to grow its brand, further increasing the accessibility of own-brand products.”

The trial will take place at Bristol and Edinburgh airports and at railway stations in London, Brighton and Sheffield.

The news comes as The Co-op re-enters the health market with a new initiative allowing orders for repeat prescriptions to be made online.

The company sold its healthcare business in 2014 for £620m, but is now aiming to re-establishing itself in the sector.

The Co-op will dispense medications ordered through an app, from a new pharmacy distribution centre Lea Green, in north-west England.

Patients will be able to order repeat prescriptions and have them sent to their home or work.

The company is also trialling a “click and collect” system where customers can collect prescriptions from lockers in Co-op stores.

Digital pharmacy accounts for less than 1 per cent of England’s £9bn prescription market, with the vast majority of the one billion prescriptions dispensed in England every year being repeat orders.

The new app has been created following the acquisition of healthcare technology firm Dimec, linking patients directly to their GP surgeries.
