Co Louth motorway crash claims talented young footballer and a mother and son from Newry

All three people tragically killed in a Co Louth motorway crash in the early hours of Saturday were from Newry.

Talented young footballer Bryan Magill died in the two vehicle collision that also claimed the lives of mother and son, Mary and Kevin Faxton.

The A1 southbound was closed for most of Saturday while emergency services dealt with the aftermath of the incident on the N1 at Carrickcarnan in County Louth around 2.15am.

Independent Newry councillor Gavin Malone told the Mirror: “I knew Bryan really well.

“He was a wonderfully talented footballer and a really lovely guy.”

Bryan, who was in his 20s, and Mary and Kevin Faxton, who were in their 80s and 50s, all died at the scene.

Another young man in his 20s was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital for treatment to injuries that are not thought to be life threatening.

Mr Malone said all those who died lived within minutes of each other near Bessbrook on the outskirts of Newry.

“My thoughts are prayers and prayers are with their families,” he added.

SDLP councillor Michael Savage said: “Whatever the circumstances, this is a real tragedy and there are two families grieving the loss of their loved ones.

“This will have a long lasting impact on the families of those whose lives were lost.

“My thoughts and prayers are with them and I also wish a full recovery to the young man who is currently undergoing treatment in hospital.

“I hope he makes a full recovery.”

Team mates of footballer Bryan have taken to social media to share their sorrow.

A post on Newry Celtic Football Club’s Facebook page reads: “Everyone at Newry Celtic are deeply saddened by the tragic death of our former player and friend Bryan “Bru” Magill. The club would like to extend their deepest sympathies to his family at this devastating loss.”

Archview United Football Club, where he played more recently, said: “All at the club are heartbroken by the untimely death of one of our top men Bryan (bru) Magill!!!

“Bru will always be remembered by all of us as a gentleman!!!

“Sleep easy our kid!!! Shout at us from above!!!”

The crash site and cars involved were examined by Garda forensic collision investigators, while an incident room has been established at Dundalk Garda station.
