Co Fermanagh grandmother who got world's first Covid vaccine considers nurse who gave it her 'family'

A 91-year-old grandma from Co Fermanagh who was the world's first person to get the Covid-19 jab has become best friends with the nurse who administered the jab.

Margaret Keenan, originally from Enniskillen, was given the world’s first coronavirus vaccination just days before her 91st birthday in December 2020.

The grandma received both doses of the Pfizer vaccine at University Coventry Hospital, near to where she has now lived for years.

Speaking at the time, the mother-of-two said: "I say go for it, because it’s free and it’s the best thing that’s ever happened."

It was nurse May Parsons who gave Margaret the jab, in the iconic moment that kicked off a global vaccination programme to fight the pandemic.

And Maggie and May, or 'Maggie May' as they’ve become fondly known, have become the best of friends.

Speaking to BBC Breakfast’s Dan Walker at the hospital about her worldwide fame, Maggie said: "It's lovely that people are happy for me, you know."

She later joked that she would have "sat better" having looked back at the clip that millions of people watched when she received the jab.

A clip showed 'Maggie May' catching up in the hospital, and the pair agreed they consider each other "family".

Nurse Parsons said: "It is quite nice to kind of chat and see how well she is doing."

The nurse also revealed how she chose Maggie's t-shirt the night before the jab.

"Because I didn't want her coming down in her gown," she said.

The Christmas hospital charity t-shirt which Maggie wore that day has since been sold 5,000 times.

Speaking about receiving the first vaccine, Margaret said didn't just do it for her but "for the NHS and everyone else involved."

When asked about her plans for the future, the 91-year-old said: "I just take it as it comes and enjoy every day really, you know."
