Co Down police arrest two men on suspicion of possessing ammunition in 'suspicious circumstances'

Police officers who carried out searches across Co Down have arrested two men on suspicion of multiple offences.

Officers from the Police Service of Northern Ireland’s Paramilitary Crime Task Force carried out the searches of properties in Portavogie, Ballywalter and Newtownards on Friday, September 17.

Two men, aged 37 and 51, were arrested on suspicion of possessing ammunition in suspicious circumstances and possessing counterfeit currency.

Detective Inspector Maguire said: “The arrests followed the search of a property in Newtownards, and the two men remain in custody at this time.

“The searches and subsequent seizure of ammunition make the community a safer place.”

The detective said the Paramilitary Crime Task Force will continue to listen to the community and act on the information they provide.

He said: “This result is testament to our commitment to target the activities of criminals badged as paramilitaries and I would ask anyone with information in relation to criminal activity to contact us on 101. Information can also be provided to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
