Co Down litterers dumping big brand rubbish urged to 'stop thoughtless behaviour'

A Co Down woman is sending a stark message to big name fast food companies, telling them to get to grips with their littering customers in Northern Ireland

Environmental volunteer Sue Newell was astonished at the volume of litter she found when she a clean up on a one mile stretch of road near her home.

In that space she managed to pack nine large bin bags with rubbish, including polystyrene and plastic packaging, and endless bags with big name branding such as McDonald’s, KFC and Burger King.

Sue who volunteers with Beach Cleaners NI was so upset by what she found on the small stretch of road on the Ards peninsula, she emptied it all on her garden to see just what litterers were throwing away.

She has urged members of the public to take their rubbish home and dispose of it properly.

Sue said: “I collected nine bags of rubbish in less than a mile along the Ballywalter Road from the Abbey entrance to the rear of Rosemount Estate. It is shocking.

“We emptied out the take away rubbish to show everyone. I’m planning on sending these images to McDonald’s, KFC and Burger King.

“This thoughtless behaviour has to stop. I was also concerned about the large volume of alcohol tins and bottles, drinking, driving and antisocial behaviour.”
