Co Down family 'devastated' as 11 day search for their beloved family dog ends in tragedy

A devastated family whose dog was missing for 11 days have thanked everyone who helped search for her after her body was recovered.

Five-year-old miniature Schnauzer Lexie vanished when she was spooked by a bang near her home in Hillsborough, Co Down and her family, their friends and supporters had been looking for her ever since.

Sadly Lexie's body was found on Sunday after an intensive search, Belfast Live reports.

But last night, they posted on a Facebook search page that their desperation to find Lexie alive had come to an end with the discovery of her body.

A post read: "It is with a heavy heart that we tell you that our beautiful Lexie’s body has been found this evening.

"We are devastated as this wasn’t the outcome we had hoped for.

As a family, we wish to thank everyone for all their kindness, support, help, assistance and encouragement over the last 11 days.

"In particular, our friends and search team who did everything to find Lexie.

"You will appreciate that we wish for privacy to deal with this but are so grateful to you all.

"If we can ask one last thing- if anyone sees her posters, would you please take them down."
