Co Down blaze kills up to 2,000 pigs, say NIFRS

It is believed that up to 2,000 pigs have died after a farm shed fire in Co Down last night.

Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue were called to the blaze on the Carrigenagh Road in Kilkeel at 8.45pm on Monday.

One male casualty suffered minor burns during the incident, NIFRS say.

A spokesperson added: "Four Fire Appliances attended the incident - two from Kilkeel, Fire Station, one from Newcastle, Fire Station, one from Warrenpoint Fire Station, along with the Animal Rescue Team, a Command Support Unit and a Water Tanker.

"Firefighters worked in difficult conditions to prevent the fire spreading to adjacent buildings, however, it is believed that approximately 1500 – 2000 pigs have perished as result of the blaze. One male casualty suffered minor burns during the incident.

"The fire was brought under control by 11:50 pm and the cause of the fire is believed to be accidental ignition."
