Co Down bar badly damaged following 'accidental' fire

A Co Down bar has been damaged following a fire in the early hours of the morning.

The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service were called to a fire at the Anchor Bar, in Newcastle at around 4.04am on Friday, January 14.

Police closed the Bryansford Road during the incident with eight appliances being sent to the scene, including an aerial appliance, with firefighters bringing the blaze under control in just over four hours.

It is understood that extensive damage was done to the kitchen area of the bar.

It is believed that the fire was started by accident.

A NIFRS spokesperson said: "We were called to a fire in a non-residential property at 4.04am.

"Eight Fire Appliances attended the incident and Firefighters used four jets and an Aerial Appliance to extinguish the fire. The fire was dealt with by 8.44am and the cause of the fire is believed to be accidental ignition."
