Co Derry man to walk 65k for 65th birthday in memory of late sister and friend

A Co Derry man is to walk 65 kilometers for his 65th birthday to raise money for a cancer charity in memory of his late sister and a friend of over 37 years.

Gerry Donnelly, from the Draperstown area, has raised more than a quarter of his £6,500 target - in keeping with his 65th birthday theme - for Macmillan Cancer Support.

In an online fundraiser, he said it's "now or never" for the walking challenge "while I still can".

He said the appeal is in "loving memory of Eileen Fitzgerald, my wee sister and my very special friend Marie Gormley, who I met over 37 years ago.

"They both ran fundraisers for this charity in the past and I feel it would be fitting to do the same in their memory and raise money to help."

He continued: "I plan to walk 65km - 1km for each year and a couple extra for luck.

"I will be walking 65km around Lough Fea, which works out at four laps of the lough for three days, then to finish five laps on the last day."

Mr Donnelly added: "The final day of the walk will be 8th July 2023 - my 65th birthday!"
