Co Derry family devastated by death of much-loved mum climb Mount Snowden in her memory

A Co Derry family devastated by the loss of their mum last year has climbed Mount Snowden in her memory.

Margaret McCormick, 59, who was from Coleraine, died last July after being diagnosed with lung cancer in April 2021.

The family previously lost their father to the same illness 27 years ago.

Her daughter, Colette Logan spoke to MyDerry about how her mum was an 'amazing person' who 'had been through so much'.

The Welsh mountain, which is the second-highest in the UK, was scaled by the family last Friday (April 29).

"This time last year my mum was given a diagnosis of lung cancer," Colette said.

"After numerous tests, we were told that the cancer would be able to be operated on and that she could get chemotherapy.

"But that wasn't the case at all, sadly, in June last year she was told that it wouldn't be curable and that she had six to eight weeks left to live."

Colette said her mum's diagnosis came as a 'hammer blow' to the entire family after her father also died at 52-year from the disease.

"She went downhill quite quickly and Marie Curie stepped in help with overnight stays and medication.

"She passed away on the 23rd July last year. It was devastating for us as a family because to be told that it was originally operable to be then told that there was nothing they could do was so upsetting.

"We actually went through this 27 years ago with my dad because he died of lung cancer as well. We knew what was in front of us but it doesn't get any easier.

"And my mum was through a whole lot in her life when my dad passed away. She was only 38 and was already a widow, she had already lost twins, suffered two heart attacks, suffered depression and was trying to raise three children on her own."

The Coleraine -native said the family want to find a way to mark Margaret's 60th birthday last month while also raising money for the 'brilliant staff' at Marie Curie.

She added: "My mum would've turned 60 on April 22 and as a family, we wanted to find a way of marking that and keeping her memory alive. That's when we decided that we would climb Snowden.

"So myself, my husband, two kids and my brother all climbed the mountain last week and it was great when we completed it.

"It's the least we could've done for Marie Curie and their staff. They were fantastic with my mum and were there whenever we needed them. They support so many families and we just wanted to give back."

Colette has started a GoFundMe page to raise money for Maire Curie. If you would like to donate, you can do so HERE.
