Co Antrim town launches campaign to get lit up in time for Christmas

Council chiefs may have to borrow Christmas lights after residents warned their festive celebrations were being “left in the dark”.

The Crumlin Deserves Better group is lobbying Antrim and Newtownabbey Council to take action after the town missed out on yuletide illumination for a second year running.

Members will decide whether to borrow from another local authority to light up the Main Street on Monday. Crumlin resident Maureen Gibson said there would be a protest at the meeting.

She added: “We shouldn’t be here at this stage and we shouldn’t have to go begging other towns for these lights.

“Not only are we left in the dark but we’re left 'til last.”

Ms Gibson said they were entitled to same festive display as the borough’s other towns – Antrim , Ballyclare , Randalstown and Glengormley .

She added: “There’s a feel good factor in town and it’s just really the whole general ambience of Christmas that we didn’t have last year.

“It was awful to be left in the dark and now we fear we’re going to have a tree and that’s it and we just don’t feel that’s enough.”

A Christmas event at Crumlin including family entertainment is planned for next Friday.

In June, councillors voted to increase the number of switch-on events in the borough – including a new site at Crumlin Leisure Centre.

However, no decision was made regarding further investment in festive street lighting at a follow-up meeting.
