Co Antrim teacher wins UK Award for Special Needs Education

A Glengormley High School teacher has spoken about her joy at having won the Silver Award for excellence in Special Needs Education.

Selected from thousands of nominations, Lynn Kerr is one of just 76 Silver Award winners across the United Kingdom.

Lynn Kerr was honoured with a Silver Award in The Award for Excellence in Special Needs Education for her "outstanding commitment to changing the lives of the children she works with every day".

Speaking about the award, she said: “I am absolutely overwhelmed to receive this prestigious recognition. The pupils in my school are truly amazing and they inspire me everyday - so in actual fact, this is our award. I couldn’t do this job without the fantastic support of my colleagues, so this is a real team effort.”

Lynn Kerr has been described by her colleagues as "a dedicated SENCO who has tirelessly worked to support and develop students within her school".

"Lynn is a vital support to all the teachers in her school and ensures that they are properly trained and utilise the latest strategies to ensure no student is disadvantaged by a specific need."

Lynn is now in the running for one of just 14 Gold Awards later in the year, in a programme which will be broadcast on the BBC.

The Pearson National Teaching Awards is an annual celebration of exceptional teachers, founded in 1998 by Lord Puttnam to recognise the life-changing impact an inspirational teacher can have on the lives of the young people they work with.

This year marks its 22nd year of celebrating, award-winning teachers, teaching assistants, headteachers and lecturers across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
