Co Antrim firefighters battling huge gorse fires

Twelve fire appliances have been scrambled to two "significant gorse fires" in the same Co Antrim town.

Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service said a total of 70 firefighters are battling the blazes near Ballycastle.

One has taken hold on Altarichard Road and the second on Islandboy Road.

It is understood specialist units have been scrambled because of the nature of the terrain and that it is proving difficult to get the blaze under control as the ground is so dry.

Smoke from the blaze can be seen as far away as Antrim town and Coleraine.

A NIFRS spokesperson said: " We are currently dealing with two significant gorse fires in our Northern Area Command, in the Altarichard Road area and the Islandboy Road area near Ballycastle.
