CMO Dr Tony Holohan shares rare weekend message as good Covid-19 lockdown news emerges

Dr Tony Holohan has praised the effort of Irish people as positive Covid-19 signs begin to emerge.

The Chief Medical Officer noted Ireland has the best seven day incidence rate in Europe according to the World Health Organization's most recent figures.

However, the doctor has also warned that it's too early to stop now.

Dr Holohan tweeted: "We are making progress on #COVID19 - we are following public health advice. Young people especially.

"Best country in EU in most recent 7-day rates. But- too early to stop. Rates still rising in >65s and have not dropped in Dublin. We need to keep it up."

Lockdown Level 5 restrictions in full

Tanaiste Leo Varadkar mirrored this message in a social media video on Friday.

Mr Varadkar said: "We are seeing some encouraging signs in the past week or so - the number of cases going down, the positivity rate falling.

"Unfortunately the number of people in ICU and in our hospitals is still increasing at a lower rate.

"So that is encouraging and indicates that the affect of the restrictions is kicking in and of course a lot of that is down to your good efforts as well, and I want to thank you for that."

The latest Covid-19 figures for Ireland will be announced later today with updates here on the Irish Mirror.
