Clyde make double swoop as they strengthen for season ahead

Clyde have today announced two new signings in defender Billy Mortimer and striker Robert Jones, both on one-year contracts.

Right-back Mortimer, 24, started his career at Queen's Park in 2014 and had loan spells at East Kilbride in 2015 and Cumbernauld Colts in 2017, before joining Colts in February 2020.

Striker Jones, 25, started his career with BSC Glasgow and spent time with East Fife, Albion Rovers and Stranraer.

He joins from League One rivals Dumbarton.

On Mortimer, Clyde boss Danny Lennon told the club's website: "We’ve been looking for a right back with a lot of pace and energy, one that will neutralise the wide threats of the opposition all day long.

"We also want good technical ability in that key position and that spark in the modern full-back to make things happen when called upon, whether it’s lifting their head to make a penetrating pass, make the kind of runs that cause the opposition problems, and very importantly, can make good deliveries into the box.

"Billy ticks all these boxes. We’ve done our due diligence on him, watched videos of his play, spoke with previous coaches, had him in for training and practice matches.

"We are very excited by what he can bring to the team in a very key area."

The Bully Wee boss said on Jones: "On reflection, I think in the past couple of seasons in League One, we haven’t had enough variety in our forward play. We've been a little one dimensional, mostly because we've looked to focus on mastering a particular style of play.

"Rob caught our eye this season and we wanted him in at pre-season training to analyse him close up, for how we would deploy him.

"He causes defenders significant problems and whilst he doesn’t fall into the category of a prolific scorer, what he does incredibly well is draw defenders to open up space for the other forwards and midfield runners to hurt the opposition.

"His link play and ability to hold the ball whilst we shape an attack is very good. He also brings height to set plays in both boxes.

"He fits the bill for what we are looking for to add another dimension to our forward play and we look forward to his contribution in the famous Clyde jersey this season."
