Clyde David Goodwillie signing prompts 'rethink' by council bosses, with veiled stadium threat

North Lanarkshire Council say they are reviewing their 'commercial partnership arrangements with Clyde' following their decision to re-sign controversial striker David Goodwillie.

The 32-year-old was signed by Raith Rovers in January but the fall-out from the move prompted a rethink, following protests against the decision. They declared that he wouldn't play for the club.

Officials and volunteers of the Kirkcaldy club walked out in protest over the signing, as Goodwillie was ruled a rapist in a civil court case in 2017.

Clyde announced this afternoon that they have re-signed the former Dundee United striker on a loan deal until the end of this season, which prompted a statement from North Lanarkshire Council, who own Broadwood Stadium.

The statement read: "In light of Clyde Football Club’s announcement confirming the return of David Goodwillie, we are reviewing all our commercial partnership arrangements with the club. We will announce the outcome as soon as all information has been considered and communicated directly with the club.

"The stadium had previously been under the management of North Lanarkshire Leisure Ltd, a separate entity to the council, but is now directly under council control.

"The council utterly condemns all and any violence towards, or abuse of, women. We offer a range of services to support women who experience abuse through Rape Crisis Lanarkshire and Aura and we would urge anyone in this position to make contact."
