Clyde boss Danny Lennon: My players were on their knees to get the win

Clyde boss Danny Lennon says his side ran themselves into the ground to get them over the line for a superb 1-0 Scottish Cup third round win at Ayr United.

The League One side went toe-to-toe with Championship club Ayr and more than matched them for long periods of the game, with Barry Cuddihy's fourth-minute strike enough to see them into the last 16.

Lennon was delighted with a result "not many people would have expected us to get" but said other than a terrific save by David Mitchell to deny Michael Moffat in 55 minutes, the side from a league above didn't threaten them too much.

He told Clyde's official website: "That's the romance of the cup, and you know anything can happen.

"We're absolutely delighted, in terms of coming down here and getting a victory that not many people would have expected us to get, but that's the romance of the cup.

"I thought the boys were absolutely terrific, I thought the shape right throughout the team today [was terrific], we got the goal, quite early on in the game there, and that always injects a little bit more enthusiasm into any team, particularly when you're the underdog.

"It gives you that extra bit, you maybe run that wee bit longer, that little bit quicker, and as much as Ayr United threw at us, I thought we handled it very well.

"Mitch had a key moment at the turn of the second half there, with an absolutely fantastic save, but I thought also in the second half we had good moments ourselves - we just made poor decisions."

Lennon joked that progressing in the competition only add to an already hectic schedule, with Clyde hosting Cove Rangers on Tuesday and Forfar on Thursday as they bid to get League One games under their belt.

He said: "We've had four games in eight days. When the fixtures all came back out there and you get the run of the games that you're having to play, I took it really personally, in terms of the fixture list that we had.

"I know there was outstanding games there, but even the geography of all of these games was a big, big ask, to be on the road for so long there.

"But we're coming into another challenge, because we've got the same next week also - the only benefit is that we're at home for two of the games now.

"You could see wee Ally Love, Ross Cunningham, them all, to be fair, but these guys in particular you could see they were on their knees right at the end of the game, but they got us over that line.

"It's pleasing, it adds another game to a very heavy schedule, which you don't really want, to be perfectly honest, but that's the romance of the cup and you always want to go in there.

"You're hoping you get a nice wee tie there, and I'm sure the chairman and directors will be very pleased that we're in the hat for the next round."
