Clyde 3 Albion Rovers 1: David Goodwillie double seals NL Cup final clash with Airdrie

David Goodwillie was the hero as Clyde progressed into a final clash with Airdrie for the NL Cup tomorrow.

The former Dundee United striker netted from the spot in the first half, won the free kick for Ally Love to score their second and netted a superb third as the Bully Wee saw off Albion Rovers 3-1.

The Bully Wee completed the line up after the Diamonds eventually edged past Cumbernauld Colts 2-0 in the other semi-final with two stoppage-time strikes earlier in the day.

The sides will now compete for some silverware at 3pm tomorrow at Broadwood, with losing sides Colts and Rovers facing each other at 12pm to decide third and fourth place in the pre-season tournament.

On home ground, Clyde took the lead in 23 minutes when David Goodwillie made his way into the box, only to be hauled down, and he dusted himself down before burying the spot-kick into the left corner.

Prior to that there had been a couple of flurries at both ends, but nothing of any real note.

Three minutes after the penalty award Goodwillie was through again and looked to be hauled down again, but this time the referee wasn't interested.

At the other end, Rovers threatened in 29 minutes when Aaron Lynas had a sight of goal, but his curling effort was well held by David Mitchell.

The sides were scrapping it out and that boiled over in 35 minutes when Clyde's new signing from Dunfermline Aaron Splaine was booked for a heavy challenge.

Clyde made a number of changes at the interval and that coincided with Rovers stepping it up in the second half.

Rovers created the first opening of the half in 52 minutes when David Wilson's cross was headed just past the left post by Kyle Doherty.

Charlie Reilly wove his way through the Clyde defence shortly after that, but his shot was well saved.

That pressure paid off in 64 minutes when Charlie Reilly made a great run down the left and his cross was slammed in by Callum Wilson.

There was a real moment of controversy in 70 minutes when Goodwillie tried to head the ball on and it appeared to strike a hand, but a free kick was awarded just outside the box.

However, from the set-piece, Ross Cunningham played the ball to Ally Love and he rifled the ball into the net.

Goodwillie made sure of the win in 79 minutes when he was sent though on goal and slipped the ball under outrushing Cammy Binnie to make it 3-1.

Clyde could have added a fourth in 83 minutes but Love's rising shot was superbly punched over the top left corner by Binnie.
