Clyde 3 Airdrie 0: Bully Wee win NL Cup for second year in a row

Clyde won the North Lanarkshire Cup for the second year in a row with a win over League One rivals Airdrie.

First half goals from Ally Love and Robert Jones provided the Bully Wee with a comfortable lead at the interval.

Although Airdrie improved in the second half after the introduction of the Dylan Easton, Clyde addded a late third when substitute David Goodwillie scored a sublime chip.

The pre-season tournament was a good workout for both teams ahead of their opening games in the Premier Sport Cup.

Clyde manager Danny Lennon rotated his starting line-up from yesterday's 3-1 win over Albion Rovers with captain and two-goal star David Goodwillie dropping to the bench.

Airdrie boss Ian Murray named four trialists - Harris O'Connor, Luke Lyons, Matthew McDonald and Daniel Scally - in their starting line-up.

The Bully Wee made a strong start and after Ally Love embarked on a weaving run down the right flank, Morgaro Gomis unleashed a powerful effort from 25 yards out but it sailed harmlessly wide.

Airdrie created their first opportunity on 13 minutes when a pinpoint diagonal pass found Craig Watson. The 26-year-old cut inside his marker but he blazed a shot over the bar.

Clyde winger Love looked the most threatening player and he fired home the opener on 20 minuets.

The former St Mirren youngster collected a loose ball before driving into the box and slotting under Max Currie from an acute angle.

The 29-year-old was the best player on the park during the first half and he was inches away from adding a stunning second on 35 minutes.

Love dropped into a pocket of space to collect the ball and unleashed a rasping drive from 30 yards out which narrowly evaded the top corner.

Airdrie struggled to create many clear-cut chances during the opening 45 minutes but Jordan Allan almost equalised on 41 minutes.

The former Wolves striker weaved between two defenders but his effort was tipped around the post by the Clyde goalkeeper.

Clyde doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time through Robert Jones. The towering striker reacted well in the box to back-heel an effort into the bottom corner from close range.

Airdrie boss Murray introduced Dylan Easton at the interval and the former Kelty Hearts man made an immediate impact.

The 27-year-old injected some attacking impetus into the Diamonds and he tested Clyde's keeper on 56 minutes from the angle.

Easton forced another save from Clyde's goalkeeper on 63 minutes as Airdrie attempted to reduce the deficit.

Both managers made a host of changes during the final twenty minutes and the tempo of the game suffered as a result.

The rain thundered down during the last five minutes as Airdrie applied some late pressure but Clyde added a late third courtesy of David Goodwillie's stunning chip.
