Clyde 1 Kilmarnock 2: Danny Lennon left frustrated by 'suicidal football' in first half

Danny Lennon was frustrated by his side’s lackadaisical start in the Premier Sports Cup defeat against Kilmarnock.

Clyde conceded within a minute of kick-off when Blair Alston capitalised on some slack passing to fire Tommy Wright’s side ahead.

Innes Cameron added a second from the penalty spot after 19 minutes to double the Championship side’s advantage.

The Bully Wee improved after the half-time interval and Ally Love pulled a goal back with a penalty but boss Lennon was left angered by Clyde’s performance in the opening twenty minutes.

“We gave the ball away three times in thirty seconds,” said Lennon. “They are ruthless and they punished us which really settled them down.

“It was tough enough before the whistle but then you have to go again. We were huffing and puffing a little but I thought that we were careless with possession.

“We didn’t ask enough questions. We didn’t get near where we wanted to be and what we spoke about before the game in terms of getting tight to them.

“Then we were caught doing too much in our own half and it’s frustrating. We have to recognise that you can’t go and play suicidal football.

“Particularly when we weren’t passing the ball well enough in the first place. They are hard lessons to have but we regrouped at half time and I thought we were a lot better [after the break].

“It wasn’t all one-way traffic and we had wee spells in the game when we asked questions of them.

“There is no doubt that you’d expect a Championship club, and a club of Kilmarnock’s history, to have opportunities.

“I thought Mitch had one or two fantastic opportunities but at that stage of the game, we wanted to have a go.

“With the personnel that we had, we wanted to be as positive as we could. There are a lot of lessons to be learned today in terms of the first half.

“It’s all about recovery now because people will expect us to go to East Kilbride on Tuesday and collect points. It’s a difficult place to go to and everybody is taking points off each other.
