Clumber Park cyclists raise more than £20,000 in 24 hour challenge for bridge restoration

Four staff members at Clumber Park have successfully completed their 24-hour fundraising challenge.

In early March 2018, the Grade I listed Ornamental Bridge was subject to an act of vandalism which left it severely damaged.

From midday on Saturday April 27 until midday on Sunday April 28, four Clumber Park employees took part in a gruelling 24-hour cycling challenge.

Known as the Big Push, the team was aiming to raise the £20,000 needed to get the bridge back to its former glory.

The Big Push team has successfully cycled for 24 hours continuously, completing more than 140 miles around Clumber Lake, raising over £20,000 in the process for a historic landmark of the park.

The ride itself was not without incident, with three ‘mechanicals’ and one fall during the 24 hours.

But the team persevered and were rewarded by hitting their £20,000 target with just a few laps to go.

They were met by a large turn out of supporters, staff and volunteers at the finish line for a champagne ending.

Torri Crapper, supporter engagement manager, who was joined on the ride by Kate Stark, Sara Gacem and Claire Sarris, spoke of her pride in the team and in the total raised, whilst thanking supporters.

She said, "We are all absolutely delighted to have completed The Big Push.

"When we set the challenge, we had no idea if it was sensible or even achievable.

"To have finished it and to have raised our target of £20,000 feels amazing.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported us throughout, including the people who have donated time, funds and equipment, to our trainer Graeme and all of our sponsors.

"We couldn’t have done it without you - you are all the true heroes here."

The repairs to the bridge will be met and covered by insurance and the National Trust will begin the rebuild of the bridge in early May.

The extra £20,000 will go towards the additional restoration costs of the bridge which is not covered by insurance.
