Cluj edge towards Celtic clash with Champions League victory over Maccabi Tel-Aviv

CFR Cluj took a step towards the Champions League third qualiying round - and a potential clash with Celtic - with a slender win over Maccabi Tel-Aviv.

The Romanian champions will head to Israel next week with a 1-0 lead after Bilel Omrani struck the only goal in a tight clash at the Stadion Dr Constantin Radulescu.

The winners of the tie will face either the Hoops or Nomme Kalju in the next stage.

Celtic are already heavy favourites to progress as they struck three first-half goals without reply against the Estonians.

Kristoffer Ajer headed in off the bar to get the ball rolling before Ryan Christie lashed home a penalty shortly after.

But it was Leigh Griffiths , making his first Celtic start for over seven months, who stole the show as he curled home a trademark free-kick.

It put Neil Lennon's side in firm control at the interval and the club took the opportunity to parade new signing Hatem Abd Elhamed on the pitch.

The defender signed a four-year deal with the Premiership champions earlier on Tuesday after leaving Hapoel Beer Sheva.

He took in the action from the stands and was quizzed over when he could make his debut.

Elhamed replied: "As soon as I have the chance, I want to succeed."
