The EFL have reportedly made contact with the FA to request an extension on the transfer window in a bid to ride the economic crisis encompassing football.
Clubs south of the Premier League are concerned they will struggle to steer clear of financial difficulty if the summer window closes as scheduled on September 1.
EFL chiefs are instead proposing the window remains open until the end of March to enable clubs greater time to offload their unwanted stars.
FIFA hold the power to make amendments to the deadline, and The Mail report that EFL chiefs have pleaded with the FA to take the case to the world governing body for consideration.
A key concern is that clubs will not be able to sell players whose wages they can no longer afford as a result of the coronavirus crisis.
Clubs are in danger of breaching Profit and Sustainability rules if they are unable to move some of their players on.
By extending the window until March, it would put less pressure on clubs, players and agents to work on deals in a short space of time when the economic landscape is still uncertain.
EFL clubs are already facing a battle for survival amid the lack of income from postponed fixtures.
Discussions are ongoing with regards to resuming football again, with a June start date being mooted.
But matches are set to be played behind closed doors for the foreseeable future, with an increasing likelihood that fan presence will not be prohibited until next year.
That could prove damaging to clubs, who do not have the same broadcast revenue they can rely on like the Premier League, hence the suggestion to extend the transfer window.
"It's a common sense move," an official at one EFL club told the Mail. "We have absolutely no idea how next season is going to look but we know that money is going to be a huge issue.
"Extending the window deep into the season would allow us the flexibility needed as we try to keep afloat but also stay competitive."
