Clubs set to meet to discuss summer football potential

Not a new topic of discussion by any means, but it seems that the Northern Ireland Football League and their clubs are getting serious about a change in the football calendar.

Ironically, coming on the back of another weekend of postponements due to adverse weather conditions, club and NIFL officials are set to meet this evening to discuss the topic for the Premiership, Championship and the PIL.

A May to February season is thought to be favoured by a number of clubs, a move that Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill has championed in the past in order to get both club and country coefficient points up.

Currently Northern Ireland sit in 48th, a rise of four places which will see them regain a third Europa League preliminary round spot.

Meanwhile, the Republic, whose League of Ireland kicked off their first round of games for the 2020 season last Friday night, are in 42nd.

At this stage it is not thought that any of the Intermediate or Juniors leagues that are not under the control of NIFL are considering a similar move.
