Clubs have discussed the prospect of a split in next year’s League of Ireland.
Irked by the number of midweek games that lead to poor gates and also the postponement of games around Europe, they feel something should change next year.
The idea was floated at meetings of the Premier Clubs Alliance and the new National League Executive Committee earlier this week.
One of the proposals discussed was a split late in the season between the top six sides, leading to five more games each, with the bottom four playing each other twice.
