Clubs could lose £3.6 BILLION as economic impact of shutdown laid bare

Close to £4billion could be lost in Europe's top five leagues alone, as the financial consequences of football being shut down are laid bare.

The lower leagues of the SPFL have already been declared over due to the coronavirus pandemic, which has seen sport across the globe suspended.

While that resolution gave the governing body the power to make the same call in the Premiership, that will have to be agreed with UEFA.

They are keen for seasons to finish, and it's not hard to see why given the financial implications.

According to data gathered by LearnBonds, the cumulative loss across the top five leagues could reach €4.1billion (£3.6million).

The Premier League alone stands to lose €800million in broadcast revenue, with a total loss of €1.28billion.

La Liga is forecast to withstand the second-largest financial hit, losing around €970m due to coronavirus outbreak. Germany’s Bundesliga, Italy’s Serie A and the French Ligue 1 follow with a potential €790m, €700m and €400m loss, respectively

As with the English Premier League, broadcasting rights are also expected to cause the biggest financial hit in these leagues.

New Ligue 1 broadcaster Mediapro - due to take over next season in a record 1.15billion euros per year deal - predict that broadcasters will need to scale back future rights-holding fees.

Mediapro chief executive Jaume Roures, speaking to AFP, said: "The amounts spent on rights, in general, had reached the maximum already. It's obvious that TV rights will be affected by this."
