Clubs call for action on Aston Villa; Butland 'must leave' Stoke; Charlton release Swansea target - latest Championship news

Clubs call for Villa punishment

Championship clubs have called on the Premier League to take action over Aston Villa next season.

The Daily Mail report that Villa, along with a number of other clubs, are currently being assessed over the EFL's profit and sustainability submissions, which is linked to Financial Fair Play.

In March, an independent panel concluded that Birmingham City should be given a nine-point deduction by the EFL after breaching FFP rules by making a loss of £48.8m over a three-year period.

The EFL are now in talks with the Premier League over taking a consistent approach to FFP issues should Villa be found in breach of rules - although the Premier League are said to be reluctant to hit any promoted club with a points deduction that would likely see them drop back into the Championship.

However, a number of Championship clubs have argued that, should the Premier League fail to issue a points deduction, then it delivers a weak message over clubs that break FFP rules.

Butland 'must leave' to become England 'keeper

Former Stoke City goalkeeper Steve Simonsen says Jack Butland must leave the club if he wants to challenge Jordan Pickford as England's No1.

Butland has continued to play back-up to the Everton stopper despite spending the season in the Championship with the relegated Potters.

"It'll be excruciatingly hard to walk away. The issue for him is he's looking to progress his career," Simonsen told the BBC .

"If he wants to become England's number one then I think at this moment in time he is going to have to move away from Stoke City."

Charlton release six

Charlton have released six first team players after their promotion back to the Championship.

Igor Vetokele, Josh Parker, Ben Reeves, Mark Marshall, Nicky Ajose and Jonny Williams have been released.

Jonny Williams is believed to have been let go for financial reasons and is already the subject of interest from Swansea in his native Wales.

Meanwhile, Patrick Bauer, Joe Aribo, Jake Forster-Caskey and Tariqe Fosu have been offered new deals.

Conway keen on England stay

Experienced winger Craig Conway hopes to stay in England after leaving Blackburn Rovers.

The Scot spent five years at Ewood Park.

Sky Sports News reports he would rather stay in English football than move back north of the border, but it is not clear whether he has offers on the table at this stage.
