Club president drops major Darwin Nunez transfer hint as Liverpool seek deal

The owner of Spanish club Almeria has appeared to drop a major hint on the future of Liverpool target Darwin Nunez.

The Benfica striker has been listed as Liverpool’s top transfer target this summer, as Jurgen Klopp looks to reshape his attack. Sadio Mane is looking increasingly likely to leave for Bayern Munich, while Takumi Minamino is expected to depart with a host of suitors interested in his services.

A fee is yet to be agreed between Liverpool and Benfica over Nunez, despite suggestions the player has already told his family and friends he is moving to Anfield. Reports in Portugal on Friday claimed Nunez has informed those close to him that he intends to move to Merseyside, despite interest from other clubs including Manchester United.

Nunez’s former club, Almeria, would be due 20 percent of any profits from a sale of their old striker, who moved to Benfica for £20m in 2020. Amid the rumours over the 22-year-old’s future, the Spanish club’s owner has appeared to drop a major hint.

Turki Alalshikh has been the owner of the Spanish club since 2019, which earned promotion to La Liga last season. In a post on Twitter, the owner has appeared to hint that Nunez is set to sign for Liverpool.

In the tweet, Alalshihk posted a mock up photo of Nunez in a Liverpool shirt. He accompanied the photo with a caption featuring emojis of a red heart, a flexed bicep, a lion and a fire.

There have also previously been claims of a five-year deal having been negotiated with the player and his representatives. However, there has still been no agreement between Liverpool and Benfica over a fee.

The Reds will not make a move at any cost and have noted Benfica's asking price of a flat €100million (£85.5m), although the Portuguese side are believed open to a structured deal which would see an initial €80m (£68.4m) set fee with €20m (£17.1m) in add-ons.
