Club director confirms Liverpool 'target' Thorgan Hazard has asked to leave

Premier League clubs monitoring a move for Thorgan Hazard have been given a boost as Borussia Monchengladbach’s director confirmed he wants to leave.

Liverpool have been heavily linked with the Belgium international recently, who is the brother of Chelsea star Eden Hazard and was formerly on the Blues’ books - but they could face a fight for his services.

Borussia Dortmund are also keen on signing the 26-year-old and a bidding war is expected to be sparked, with Gladbach having little choice but to accept a departure as Hazard’s current deal is due to expire at the end of next season.

His departure will be a significant blow for the Bundesliga side, as he has scored 11 goals and provided 12 assists this season.

But club director Max Eberl has confirmed that the player intends to leave Borussia Park.

“We made our intentions to extend Thorgan's contract clear a while back now, but he hasn't reciprocated that interest,” he told the club’s official website.

“He has now told us that he doesn't want to extend his contract and instead wants to take the next step in his career by leaving the club.

Liverpool favourites to complete five summer transfers

“Interested parties have to offer us a transfer fee that recognises his worth as an exceptional Bundesliga forward and a regular feature in one of the best national teams in the world.

“If it ends up being the case that Thorgan leaves us, then we will do what we’ve done well in the last few years - we will take the money we make from the transfer and use it to buy more exciting players for our team.”
