Club demands hampering Tom Mohan and Ireland under-19s as they prepare for Euro finals

Ireland boss Tom Mohan is frustrated that key players will miss the U19 European finals because their clubs have pulled rank.

Ireland are one of just eight elite teams in the tournament having gone on a six-match unbeaten run to qualify.

But while it’s a prestigious competition, it falls outside the FIFA window so clubs get the final say.

Striker Adam Idah won’t feature as Norwich City want him in their first-team squad for pre-season.

Southampton’s Michael Obafemi and Stoke City’s Nathan Collins are in the same boat and so too is Aaron Connolly at Brighton.

Tottenham striker Troy Parrott is not yet ruled out but remains a considerable doubt as he works his way back from injury.

Spurs will ultimately have the final say and so do Manchester United and West Ham regarding Lee O’Connor and Conor Coventry respectively.

Coventry has already been told to report for Hammers training on July 8, the day before the Irish squad departs for London and then Armenia, via Kiev.

And Mohan hopes that senior team prospect Luca Connell’s uncertain club future - with Celtic interested - does not jeopardise his involvement.

“Some clubs are very much in agreement to allow the players come and let’s hope that‘s the same with Luca,” he said.

Mohan put an extended 34-man squad through their paces on a three-day camp in Dublin this week and will settle on a 20-man selection for the finals next week.

Yesterday, he said: “The finals aren’t on a FIFA week so the club have first call. You’re frustrated because when you qualify you want everyone available

“It is what it is and we’d a fair idea it was coming. A few other countries may be in the same boat, although they may not be as affected as us.

“We were missing five of the lads at the elite qualifying phase and the boys came in and did very, very well. At least it’s not something that hasn’t happened before.”

Mohan continued: “Troy Parrott is still coming back from his injury. We have to see how that unfolds first of all and then whether he’s going to be with Spurs’ first team.

“The most important thing with any player, especially coming back from an injury, is his well-being. That’s the same with all players.

“Players have got to be fit and then we’ll assess the situation but we’d very much like to have Troy with us as he’s a quality performer.”
