Club chief addresses claims Nottingham Forest's promotion push could be cancelled

Watford chairman and chief executive Scott Duxbury has moved to address claims regarding the cancellation of the Premier League season.

Last night Udinese director Pierpaolo Marino said that the Premier League are set to release a statement imminently confirming that the season has been cancelled because of coronavirus.

Any decision the Premier League make will almost certainly be followed by the EFL, who administer the Championship.

Nottingham Forest are pushing for promotion to the top flight and are in fifth, four points clear of Bristol City in seventh and Sabri Lamouchi's side are well set for a play-off place.

Marino, whose side are owned by the Pozzo family who run Watford, sparked fear among fans of clubs in the Premier League and below who are hoping the season returns.

The 2019-20 season is on hold because of coronavirus, which has claimed 6,159 deaths.

Duxbury, meanwhile, has distanced the Hornets from Marino's claims.

“The discussions Watford and all the clubs have had with the Premier League make it clear the overriding ambition is to finish the season but only when it is completely safe to do so," he said.

"The most important concern at this stage is people's health and safety and nothing should deflect from that."
