Club Brugge vs Arsenal LIVE: Champions League result, latest updates and reaction after routine win

LIVE: Club Brugge vs Arsenal - (Arsenal FC via Getty Images)

Club Brugge vs Arsenal LIVE

Arsenal made it six wins from six in this season’s Champions League with a comfortable victory over Club Brugge on Wednesday night. Noni Madueke was the hero for the Gunners, following up his goal in the 3-1 win over Bayern Munich a fortnight ago with a brace, while Gabriel Martinelli kept up his remarkable goalscoring record in the competition.

The result sees the north London outfit restore their three-point lead at the top of the 36-team Champions League group as they take a giant step towards confirming automatic qualification for the knockout stages. Mikel Arteta suffered a triple blow ahead of kick-off with Declan Rice, William Saliba and Leandro Trossard all ruled out, thus joining Gabriel, Kai Havertz and Cristhian Mosquera on the sidelines.

That said, Gabriel Jesus di come off the bench in the second half to make his first appearance since January after replacing Max Dowman in Arsenal’s Champions League squad and also marked his return with a goal. Club Brugge changes

19:15 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

New Club Brugge head coach Ivan Leko has opted to resist making too many changes for tonight’s Champions League clash.

In fact, he has made just one from the side that started the 3-2 loss against St. Truidense at the weekend as Simon Mignolet replaces Dani van den Heuvel in between the posts.

Arsenal changes

19:10 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Mikel Arteta makes five changes to the Arsenal team that started against Aston Villa at the weekend.

Viktor Gyokeres, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Noni Madueke and Gabriel Martinelli are among those who return to the XI.

The biggest talking point is the inclusion of Christian Norgaard. He is set to operate at full-back with Jurrien Timber not in the matchday squad.

Triple Arsenal blow

18:35 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Arsenal have been hit by a triple injury blow ahead of their Champions League clash against Club Brugge.

Declan Rice, Leandro Trossard and William Saliba have not travelled to Belgium for the game tonight after they were absent from training on Tuesday afternoon.

Rice is ill and Trossard is struggling with the calf problem he picked up two weeks ago against Bayern Munich.

Trossard came off the bench at Villa Park on Saturday, and scored, but he was substituted before the end of the game.

Saliba is still out injured due to the knock he picked up in training on November 29, despite Mikel Arteta previously stating he was close to returning.

All change at Club Brugge

18:30 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Club Brugge sacked head coach Nicky Hayen on Monday after a run of two wins in seven games.

That run included three defeats in the Belgian Pro League, which has seen Brugge slip to third in the table, five points behind leaders Royale Union Saint-Gilloise.

Hayen has been replaced by Ivan Leko, who joins from KAA Gent, and he will be in the dugout for tonight's clash at home to Arsenal.

Gabriel Jesus nears Arsenal return

18:25 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

After a disappointing defeat at Aston Villa, there are few Arsenal players better placed than Gabriel Jesus to lift the mood, writes Simon Collings.

Jesus is a popular figure in the Gunners’ dressing room, a bundle of energy who gets on with everyone and loves to have a joke.

The Brazilian’s smile was even bigger on Tuesday after Arsenal took the decision to add him to their Champions League squad, following an injury to Max Dowman.

Jesus has been out of action since January, when he suffered a serious knee injury and was forced to undergo surgery.

It has been a long and challenging road back, but finally the end is in sight and the striker could make his comeback tonight against Club Brugge.

Predicted Arsenal XI

18:15 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Mikel Arteta hinted during his press conference on Tuesday night that Riccardo Calafiori’s minutes are being managed, so he could drop out of the team for Myles Lewis-Skelly.

Christian Norgaard and Ethan Nwaneri may get rare starts in midfield, while Mikel Merino could drop in there without Rice is ill.

In attack, Viktor Gyokeres has come off the bench in the last three games and so may be handed a start.

Out wide, Arteta could look to rest Bukayo Saka, which would open the door for Noni Madueke to play.

Arsenal predicted XI (4-3-3): Raya; White, Timber, Hincapie, Lewis-Skelly; Nwaneri, Norgaard, Merino; Madueke, Gyokeres, Martinelli.

Three big Arsenal changes Mikel Arteta could make

18:10 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Arsenal are the only team left in the Champions League still to have a 100 per cent record and they are on course to finish in the top eight, which will see them progress straight to the last 16, writes Simon Collings.

Mikel Arteta may opt to make changes for the game in Belgium, given Arsenal’s commanding position and their hectic schedule.

Saturday’s last-gasp defeat by Aston Villa in the Premier League concluded a gruelling run of five games in 14 days, with several Arsenal players looking exhausted at the end.

Here, Standard Sport takes a look at some of the changes Arteta could make in Bruges…
