Club Brugge confirmed as Belgian champions as another Celtic title precedent is set

The Belgian Pro League has officially ended, with Club Brugge crowned as champions.

As with most European leagues, Belgium's top flight has been suspended since March due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The first portion of the season had already been completed, so it was decided to declare the table final as it stood with Brugge 15 points clear at the summit.

The Scottish Premiership is in a similar position, with Celtic 13 points clear at the top when the action ground to a halt.

Initially Belgium's decision put them on a collision course with UEFA, who insisted that leagues should be played to a finish.

However, that stance softened and it was ruled that leagues could end due to financial issues or government decrees.

The Pro League delayed its decision several times, with UEFA setting a May 25 deadline, but on Friday it was confirmed that Club Brugge are champions.

The motion to end the season passed with over 80 per cent of the vote, with Waasland-Beveren relegated to the second tier.

The move follows the official end of the Ligue 1 season which saw Paris Saint-Germain take the title having been 12 points clear with a game in hand.

Friday also saw Scottish Premiership clubs meeting to discuss ending the season on a points-per-game basis.
