Club Brugge boss drops Tahith Chong a Manchester United transfer hint after debut

Club Brugge manager Philippe Clement has hinted Tahith Chong could stay beyond his season-long loan from Manchester United.

The 21-year-old winger joined the Belgian club for the remainder of the campaign in January after spending the first half of the season with Werder Bremen.

Chong struggled for minutes in the Bundesliga and started just four times in the league.

He managed to score one goal for Bremen in the DFB Pokal Cup and, as a result, his spell in Germany was cut short prematurely.

Things have started much more promisingly over in Belgium, though, with Chong netting on his debut and registering an assist in a 6-1 win over Olsa Brakel.

The Dutchman scored a delightful chip over the onrushing goalkeeper to add Brugge's fifth of the match.

After the game, Clement heaped praise on the United loanee and even insinuated that Chong may decide to stay in Belgium beyond the end of his loan deal.

“You can see that he has had a good education," the manager told HLN.

"Tahith picks up things faster than boys who have had a less good education. Or than players who come from another continent. It all goes faster with him. If you tell him something, he answers.”

“Maybe he doesn’t want to leave later, maybe he wants to stay here.”

Chong's current contract has 18 months to run, taking him up to June 2022, though United have the option to trigger a one-year extension on that deal without negotiating fresh terms.
