Club 1872 demand Rangers scrap Celtic friendly 'debacle' as group claim they were snubbed by Stewart Robertson

Club 1872 have again called for Rangers to withdraw from the Sydney Super Cup and are "pleased" by claims the tournament is under threat.

The fans group joined a wider chorus of supporter anger at Ibrox when the controversial friendly against Celtic in Australia was announced earlier in March.

The Glasgow rivals are set to meet for the first time outside of Scotland in November but the plans were met with ferocious backlash from both sides.

A report on Thursday morning claimed "unresolved issues" among organisers have put the event in doubt.

Club 1872 say they wrote to managing director Stewart Robertson over the "debacle" last week without receiving a response.

And they're adamant the alleged issues give the club a timely out.

A statement said: "Club 1872 is pleased by reports this morning from Australia that the Sydney Super Cup, Old Firm ‘friendly’ may be in doubt.

"We wrote to Stewart Robertson last week on this issue but have not received the courtesy of a response. It has, however, been clear from public communication from James Bisgrove that the Rangers executive team is doubling down on their wish to participate, despite the backlash from supporters.

"However, if reported issues with the organiser have now presented an extremely fortunate opportunity for Rangers to pull out of this debacle then we would urge the RIFC Plc board to step in, belatedly take the correct decision to remove Rangers from any participation in this tournament and find a more suitable way of engaging with our loyal overseas supporters in Australia and beyond."

Neither club has commented on claims the tournament may not go ahead, with Celtic releasing an interview with manager Ange Postecoglou looking ahead to his return to Australia on Thursday afternoon.

But it’s understood the Parkhead side remain committed to the trip that has been labelled "Ange’s Homecoming".
