A senior official of the Tokyo Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games expressed his pessimistic view on introducing daylight saving time for the Games on Thursday.
Submitting a bill for the system's adoption during the extraordinary Diet session that will be convened in autumn this year will likely be shelved.
Toshiaki Endo, a vice president of the committee who is a House of Representatives lawmaker from the ruling Liberal Democratic Party and a former minister in charge of the Games, told reporters, "It seems difficult to introduce it by 2020 due to adjustments to computer systems and the response from the general public."
Prior to his remarks, LDP lawmakers connected to the issue had the first meeting of a study group to discuss the matter at party headquarters on the day.
At the meeting, opposing views were raised one after another such as, "it will require a lot of work to adjust systems," while others expressed positive opinions, citing it will contribute to energy conservation.
