Cloudmakers Trio: Abstract Forces review – a brilliant game of rhythmic hide-and-seek

Jim Hart: 'his improvised lines grab your attention'.
Jim Hart: 'his improvised lines grab your attention'.

The Cloudmakers are Jim Hart (vibraphone), Michael Janisch (bass) and Dave Smith (drums). The essence of their music is summed up in the title of one of these seven tracks: Angular Momentum. Hart has a positive genius for rhythmic hide-and-seek. His improvised lines grab your attention and won’t let go, no matter how many tricky corners he gets into. It should be an exhausting experience, but somehow it isn’t. Perhaps the sound of the vibraphone, so mild and bell-like, has something to do with it. But there’s no mistaking the musicianship and phenomenal togetherness of all three.
