Clothes retailer shuts Durham city centre outlet - but hopes to open new store

A retailer has closed its Durham city centre store - but it is looking for a new premises.

M&Co ceased trading at the Prince Bishops Shopping Centre on Saturday.

It is the latest blow for the high street after the closure of Marks and Spencer and Pret A Manger on Silver Street last year.

A spokesperson for M&Co said: "As we have built up a loyal customer base in the area, we are working on an option in the city so we can continue to meet customer needs."

The closure comes after new figures revealed 231 shops in the North East closed last year, with 24 shutting in Durham and only 14 opening.

Shops that opened included luxury fashion store Psyche, Hotel Indigo and Marco Pierrie White Steakhouse Bar and Grill, and Zapatista Burrito Bar.

Odeon is set to open a luxury new cinema at The Riverwalk within a matter of weeks.

The Odeon Luxe Durham will have 403 luxury, handmade reclining seats across six cinema.
