Closure order issued to stop ongoing vandalism at huge derelict mill

A special closure order has been issued to tackle vandalism at a disused Wigan mill.

Rylands Mill, off Kenyon Road and close to Mesnes Park, has been the site of repeated anti-social behaviour problems, prompting regular police calls to the site.

Vandals have been reported breaking into the mill and causing damage or setting fires.

Now, Wigan Council have moved for stricter punishments for anyone caught inside the mill site, with a new closure order issued.

It means those caught in the area can now be prosecuted for breaking the order as well as trespassing.

There will also be increased police patrols around the mill to catch anyone breaking the new rules.

In a post on Facebook, an officer from GMP's Wigan West team welcomed the news and said it was part of a wider plan.

They said: "GMP with the support of Wigan Council are working to reduce anti-social behaviour at the derelict Rylands Mill site (also known as Pagefield Mill).

"Area team officers are patrolling regularly and the council have obtained a closure order for the location that prevents entry to the site by any unauthorised persons and any person breaching this can be prosecuted."

The closure notice will remain in place until 4pm on Thursday, October 8.

The mill, which was built in 1864 for Manchester's first millionaire, John Rylands and soon became the lifeblood of the local community, offering work in the textile industry.

It has remained in a state of disrepair and was previous listed as one of the country's most at risk historical sites.

Anyone with information about anti-social behaviour at Rylands Mill should call 101.
