Closure of Irish horse racing looks set to be extended next week

Irish racing fans and those working in the local racing industry will have to wait until next week for further news on a resumption date.

With the ongoing Covid-19 restrictions expected to be extended this week, the board of Horse Racing Ireland will wait until their meeting next Wednesday before issuing an update.

HRI has cancelled all meetings until next Sunday week, April 19, and the remainder of the National Hunt season, which was due to close on May 2.

But it now looks inevitable that the closure of Irish racing will be extended by the Board next week.

Brian Kavanagh, CEO of HRI, reflecting on the wider implications of the crisis, said yesterday: “It’s out of our hands,” but added: “Irish racing will be ready to start quickly when we get the go-ahead.”
