'Closing down sale' starts at Peacocks and Bonmarche stores in Kilmarnock

Two Kilmarnock shops have launched closing down sales in their town centre stores.

Both Peacocks and Bonmarche have placed signs in their windows that cast serious doubt over their future in the town.

The development has put a number of jobs at risk and follows on from a string of high-profile casualties in the town centre.

Both shops are subsidiaries of the Edinburgh Woollen Mill group.

The Daily Mirror reported yesterday that the retailer was on the brink of collapse after filing a notice to appoint administrators.

The devastating news has reportedly put 24,000 jobs at risk across the UK.

Steve Simpson, chief executive of the EWM group, said the past seven months has been "extremely difficult" as he warned normal trading will be "impossible" in the wake of a second coronavirus outbreak.

He said closures will be "inevitable" as the brand fights for its survival.
