Closed toilet block in north Bristol to be sold and the profits used to renovate other closed public toilets

The shut public toilet block in Westbury-on-Trym high street is being sold to help fund the renovation of the other closed conveniences across the city.

It has been 18 months since Bristol City Council closed all of its on-street public toilets due to budget pressures - which saw the loss of 18 public facilities across the city.

The toilet block in Westbury Village was among those affected and the building was boarded up.

But recently residents noticed that the hoarding around the toilets had been removed, prompting questions about what that meant.

Bristol City Council has now confirmed that it is proceeding with plans to sell the toilet block.

A spokesperson added: “The money raised from this will be ring-fenced for funding the renovation and development of other former toilet facilities in the city, for example as cafes, galleries and other community spaces.

“These could include public toilets for use and operation by the community.”

When the closures were announced campaigners argued they would affect the most vulnerable, including the elderly, children and disabled people.

In an attempt to mitigate the impact of the closure, which will save the city council £440,000 a year,  the authority launched a 'Community Toilet Scheme' which calls on local businesses to open up their loos for free.

So far more than 100 venues across the city have signed up to the scheme and there are still 13 public toilets open across the city - most of which are within parks.

However concerns have been raised about the spread of public conveniences across the city and as well as some of the opening hours.

Bristol City Council has said it is continuing to work with businesses and community groups to extend the Community Toilets Scheme.’
