Closed Portishead Golf Course to be allowed to 'rewild'

The once neatly manicured greens of Portishead Golf Course will unrecognisable if plans to plant trees and let the grass grow tall go ahead.

The Nore Road club closed last year after landowner North Somerset Council formally recognised two footpaths across the course.

The nine-hole course is among the sites the authority now wants to “rewild” to boost biodiversity and combat climate change

It is consulting on the plans and has released a map that shows much of the course covered in trees - the authority hopes to plant 50,000 across the area.

Other parts of the golf course will be covered in tall grass and wildflowers, along with many other sites across North Somerset.

Adrian Stiff, who ran the club, said: “Seems a nice idea to let the area go back to nature.

“The new trees have been located on the lower land so not to pose any problem with residents’ views from Nore Road.”

The council said on its consultation website: “Rewilding seeks to change the way open spaces are managed to allow nature to reinstate a more natural environment to benefit both biodiversity and local communities.

“We are committed to rewilding our parks, open spaces and verges across the district. In order to achieve this, we are planning to change some of our maintenance programmes.

“This will primarily include planting more trees and allowing some areas of grass to grow taller.

“We have identified locations to rewild and we have created an interactive map to show where these are.

“The map shows our amenity grass areas, which are the areas which we are proposing rewilding.

“These locations are where we are proposing to plant trees or let the grass grow taller.

“We want to know your opinion about our proposals and would also like to know of any further locations you think may be suitable for rewilding.”

A lot of the tree planting is planned in Portishead. Other sites in the town include Badger Rise, Blackdown Road, Avon Way, Hallets Way, The Vale, Brampton Way, Battery Point, Ham Green, Lake Grounds, Kittiwake Drive, Robin Place, Central Park and Merlin Park.

The map also shows Elm Farm, Pound Lane and Blackthorn Way in Nailsea, Chestnut Grove in Clevedon, and Ladye Bay in Walton St Mary allocated for tree planting.

In Weston-super-Mare, sites include the Oldmixon recreation ground, Hutton Moor, the Winterstoke Road roundabout, Locking Road and the Maltlands.

The consultation closes on January 24.
