Closed Nottinghamshire pub could be reopening with a big emphasis on food

A closed Nottinghamshire village pub is set to be brought back to life by new owners. The Bulls Head, in East Leake, had been a traditional pub, serving cask ale and showing live sport, before its closure last summer.

Plans have been submitted to Rushcliffe Borough Council by Chilled Pubs. The six-strong chain runs pubs including the renowned Bulls Head in Repton and the Joiners Arms in Quarndon.

Chilled Pubs is seeking extend the pub, in Main Street, to the rear and side, including a permanent insulated marquee and pergola, to provide space for 170 covers. It also wants to expand the kitchen. A new outdoor seating area is planned and the layout of the car park would be changed.

Consultants Marrons Planning said: "Following the closure of the Bull's Head in the summer of 2022 the building has remained empty but has recently been purchased by Chilled Pubs who seek to restore the pub to its position as a strong community asset.

"The Bulls Head, East Leake, is anticipated to make a significant contribution to the local economy of East Leake, and Rushcliffe and there is clear in principles support for this. However this contribution is reliant upon the proposed extensions which will enable the pub to operate viably as a ‘food led’ destination. Without this it cannot be used in a viable way and will remain vacant."

The proposals state there is no intention to play loud music in the marquee as it wouldn't fit with the chain's ambience. Chilled Pubs boast "seriously good food and drink" in a "really good pub."

Menus include starters and sharers such as Greek lamb flatbread, yakitori skewers and bao buns, and sandwiches like an open gorgonzola steak sandwich and cod buns. Burgers, classics of fish and chips and katsu chicken, wood-fired pizzas and big yakitori sticks also feature.
