'Close to De Bruyne!' - Edu told his next Arsenal transfer mission to follow Mikel Arteta policy

Arsenal are reportedly interested in signing Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Florian Wirtz.

The 18-year-old is regarded as one of German football’s top emerging talents after a breakout 2020/21 season in which he scored eight goals across all competitions.

According to Bild journalist Christian Falk, Wirtz is attracting the interest of Gunners boss Mikel Arteta.

However, a number of the continent's leading clubs including Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Liverpool have also been linked with the Leverkusen star.

Arsenal adopted a youthful transfer policy over the summer, with each of their signings being under the age of 23, meaning Wirtz certainly fits the profile of player that sporting director Edu is looking to bring to the club.

Wirtz has been in scintillating form this season, he already has five goals and grabbed four assists across all competitions for Leverkusen and could follow in the footsteps of the man he replaced - Kai Havertz - in securing a big-money move away from the Bay Arena.

Here’s what some Arsenal fans made of the club being linked with one the hottest talents in Europe.

@billyTM4587: Yes please amazing player

@Cypriot_Gooner: If true, tidy player. Vision

@DeMattiOhh: SIGN HIM UP @Arsenal

However, there could be a stumbling block in any possible move as Wirtz's father has all but confirmed the youngster looks set to stay with his current club - for the time being at least.

He told Bild: "Florian definitely wants to play a good role in Leverkusen for the next two years.

"What comes next is not yet known. His focus now is only on Bayer and the national team."
